How to Turn a Photo into a Digital Painting with Adobe Fresco 🎨

Have you ever wanted to transform a favorite photo into a unique work of art? With Adobe Fresco, it’s easier than ever to create stunning digital paintings inspired by your photos. Whether it’s a cherished memory, a beloved object, or a beautiful landscape, this demonstration will help you bring your images to life in a whole new way. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at how I turned a photo of a cute bird vase into a vibrant, stylized piece of art.

Why Adobe Fresco?
Adobe Fresco is the perfect tool for creating digital art, thanks to its intuitive interface and powerful features like live brushes, which mimic the behavior of real paint. Whether you’re a beginner exploring digital art or a professional looking for new techniques, Fresco offers endless creative possibilities.

Step 1: Importing Your Photo

Start by importing your chosen photo into Adobe Fresco. For this tutorial, I used a photo of a whimsical bird vase. You can use any image that inspires you—a person, a pet, an object, or a place.

Once the photo is in Fresco, adjust its size and position to fit your canvas. Lower the photo's opacity and add a new layer on top for sketching.

---

Step 2: Sketch the Outline

On the new layer, use a simple brush to trace the key shapes and details of your photo. Keep it clean and minimal—this sketch will serve as the foundation for your painting. Remember, you don’t have to replicate every detail perfectly. Simplify complex elements to create a more stylized and artistic look.

---

Step 3: Choose a Color Palette

Next, it’s time to bring your painting to life with color. I pulled my palette directly from the original photo, using Fresco’s eyedropper tool to sample colors like the soft yellows, blues, and earthy tones of the bird vase. This ensures that the painting stays true to the source while allowing you to emphasize or tweak the colors for added vibrancy.

---

Step 4: Add Base Colors

Create another layer below your sketch and start filling in the base colors. Use solid brushes to block out the main shapes. Don’t worry about details at this stage—focus on separating areas like the bird’s body, the beak, and the vase base with clean, flat colors.

---

Step 5: Add Depth with Live Brushes

Here’s where the magic of Adobe Fresco really shines! Using live brushes, you can mimic the texture and blending properties of real paint. For this project, I used watercolor brushes to add soft gradients and oil brushes to create depth and texture.

Blend colors naturally, layering highlights and shadows to give the painting dimension. For the bird vase, I added subtle highlights to make the ceramic surface shine and rich shadows to emphasize the contours.

---

Step 6: Refine the Details

With the main painting complete, focus on the smaller details that bring the artwork to life. Add delicate lines, decorative textures, or stylized patterns that enhance the overall design. I emphasized the bird’s wings and added soft shading to the vase for a polished finish.

---

Step 7: Simplify the Background

A clean and minimal background helps your subject stand out. In this piece, I opted for a simple white that complements the bird vase without overwhelming the composition.

---

The Final Touch

And there you have it! A photo transformed into a vibrant, stylized digital painting. This technique is versatile, fun, and perfect for creating personalized artwork that reflects your unique style.
